This commemorates the night in 1810 (actually the early morning of 16th September) when the father of Mexican independence, the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, used these words at the close of a speech delivered to his parishioners in the small provincial town of Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo), in the state of Guanajuato. In the address he urged the people of the town, who were mainly poor Indians and lower-class “mestizos”, to rebel against Spanish colonial rule, and he then led them on his unsuccessful military campaign, which ended in his execution the following year. The president's re-enactment of the “ grito de Dolores” is echoed in similar events in towns and cities across the nation.* * *m cry, shout;dar gritos shout;a grito pelado at the top of one’s voice;pedir algo a gritos fam be crying out for sth;poner el grito en el cielo hit the roof fam ;el último grito en teléfonos móviles the last word in cell phones* * *grito nm: shout, scream, crya grito pelado: at the top of one's voice* * *grito n1. Later, it came to have the meaning it does today, namely a contest in which competitors demonstrate their skill in riding, roping, and throwing cattle. The DRAE gives several related meanings for the term rodeo, including a place where cattle are gathered to rest or spend the night, or to be counted or sold. Rodeo also describes the process of gathering cattle for these purposes. The DRAE also notes that in some Latin American countries, the term also refers to a contest in which competitors ride wild horses and steers bareback and demonstrate their skill in throwing lassos. -

For some Spaniards it is crucial to Spanish identity. The season runs from March to October in Spain, from November to March in Latin America. The art of bullfighting is given the name tauromaquia. The bullfighters in a corrida gather in cuadrillas. The principal bullfighter, or matador, is assisted by peones. Their outfit, the traje de luces, consists of a tight silk jacket and trousers, decorated with embroidery and epaulettes, and a black, two-cornered hat known as a montera* * *= bull.Ex: This article introduces an expert system the purpose of which is propose some candidate bull breeds for a cow to give birth to calves who might have improved properties in the point of eugenics.

As well as in Spain itself (where campaigns against it are on the increase, especially among young people), it is popular in many Latin American countries, especially Peru and Mexico, though it has been banned in Uruguay since 1912. The fight begins with the band playing as the mounted officials (“alguacilillos”) ride into the ring, followed by a majestic parade of bullfighters (“toreros”). During this parade (or “paseíllo”), the bullfighters, wearing their colourful costumes (known as “trajes de luces”), lead in their teams of assistants (“subalternos”) and picadors. First the bull is provoked into charging by a series of passes (the “pases de capote”) made with a red and yellow coloured cape. This is followed by the three main stages of the bullfight. In the first, the “tercio de varas”, mounted picadors jab the bull with a spear; in the second, the “tercio de banderillas”, small barbed darts (“banderillas”) are thrust into the bull's back as it charges past the “banderillero”; and finally, the “tercio de muerte” features the bullfighter and his red cape (“muleta”) as he confronts and kills the bull, and (with luck) makes a triumphal exit.* * *m bull;ir a los toros go to a bullfight;tomar al toro por los cuernos take the bull by the horns* * *toro nm: bull* * *toro n bull -
13 guancoche
(Sp. model spelled same [gwaŋkót∫e] < vanchoche, in Tarascan [a Meso-American Indian language of Southwestern Michoacan, Mexico], a net in which loads are carried, and in Sinaloa, Mexico, a blanket or bag made of the most ordinary sort of fiber)A gunnysack or large basket used in the Southwest and Mexico to carry items on a mule, horse, or burro. Santamaría glosses it as a thick, coarse, woven fabric used for lining and packing and in making gunnysacks. He indicates that the term is common in nearly all Latin-American countries, with some variations in spelling and meaning. Related forms: gancoche, gangocho, gangochi, guangochi, guangocho; all share the fundamental meaning of a coarse, crude, sparse cloth or loose robe; or a large sack, blanket, wrapped package, or container for heavy things made from such a fabric, all of which may be oversized or loose-fitting. It was probably influenced by the Mexicanism guango 'loose-fitting,' and has emigrated from Mexico to other countries. Whether or not cowboys or ranchers used such an artifact to transport goods, they probably knew some individuals who did and were aware of the term. -

2.SM / F LAm (Pol) missing personLOS DESAPARECIDOS Los desaparecidos is the name given to those who disappeared during the military dictatorships in the Southern Cone in the 1970s. Thousands of people were taken from their homes, schools and places of work and never seen again. Few of "the disappeared" were ever found alive, although a certain number of bodies were recovered in mass graves. Families of the victims joined forces to form pressure groups like Argentina's Madres y Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo, but although some managed to identify and recover the bodies of their relatives, the perpetrators were rarely brought to justice.número de muertos, heridos y desaparecidos — number of dead, wounded and missing

[en catástrofe] missing person;ha habido veinte muertos y tres desaparecidos twenty people have been killed and three are missing2. [en represión política] missing person [kidnapped and possibly murdered by the authorities]DESAPARECIDOSThe kidnap of alleged subversives and holding of them in undisclosed locations became a widespread repressive technique in many Latin American countries from the 1960s onwards, and is especially associated with the period of the “guerra sucia” (dirty war) in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile in the 1970s. Those kidnapped, whether by the military, secret police or paramilitary groups, were usually tortured and many were killed. The bodies were disposed of in secret, and in some cases they were dropped from planes over the open sea. Surviving friends and relatives lived for years in a permanent state of anxiety and uncertainty, as they were given no official information about the victim's fate, or the location of their body. With the restoration of democracy in these countries, there were campaigns for the truth about the kidnap victims (the desaparecidos) to be revealed. In spite of the various types of amnesty legislation that the military had enacted before relinquishing power to civilians, it was possible to gain much information about the fate of the victims through "truth commissions", and in Argentina some of the most senior of those responsible for the campaign of kidnap, torture and murder have even been brought to trial and convicted.* * *I adj missingII m, desaparecida f1:el desaparecido the deceased2 L.Am.un desaparecido one of the disappeared* * *desaparecido, -da adj1) : late, deceased2) : missingdesaparecido, -da n: missing person* * *desaparecido adj missing -

There are 46 members appointed for life from among Spain's most prestigious writers and linguists. It works in collaboration with the 21 other Spanish language academies, which represent all the countries where Spanish is a native language. Its first dictionary, the six-volume Diccionario de Autoridades, was published between 1726 and 1739.* * *femenino = Real Academia Española* * *femenino = Real Academia Española* * *RAE - Real Academia de la Lengua Española (↑ RAE a1)= Real Academia Española* * *Spanish Royal AcademyRAEThe “Real Academia Española” or RAE (Spanish Royal Academy) is the institution which sets the lexical and syntactic standards for the use of Spanish through the dictionaries and grammars it produces. It was founded in 1713, on the model of the French Academy, and its lexicographical work was summarized in a single-volume dictionary which appeared in 1780. This has been continually revised, with the latest full update being the 22nd edition of 2001 (the latest updates can now be consulted on-line). The 46 members of the Academy are elected from among leading writers and intellectuals, though the first woman member did not arrive until 1978. They meet regularly to deliberate on problematic aspects of the language, and to discuss possible linguistic reforms. The Academy has been regarded by some as a conservative institution, out of touch with the everyday language used in the street and the varieties of Spanish spoken in Latin America. To address the latter issue, closer ties have been established with the various corresponding Academies of each of the Latin American countries, and regular international conferences have been held since 1951. More recently, the Academy has started to widen its range of dictionary publications, and an Internet site was opened in 1998, to which users can now send language queries.* * *f abr (= Real Academia Española) Royal Spanish Academy -

2) (=pago) [de piso] service charge, charge for communal servicesCOMUNIDAD AUTÓNOMA In Spain the comunidades autónomas are any of the 19 administrative regions consisting of one or more provinces and having political powers devolved from Madrid, as stipulated by the 1978 Constitution. They have their own democratically elected parliaments, form their own cabinets and legislate and execute policies in certain areas such as housing, infrastructure, health and education, though Madrid still retains jurisdiction for all matters affecting the country as a whole, such as defence, foreign affairs and justice. The Comunidades Autónomas are: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Islas Baleares, Canarias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, País Vasco, La Rioja, Comunidad Valenciana, Ceuta and Melilla. The term Comunidades Históricas refers to Galicia, Catalonia and the Basque Country, which for reasons of history and language consider themselves to some extent separate from the rest of Spain. They were given a measure of independence by the Second Republic (1931-1936), only to have it revoked by Franco in 1939. With the transition to democracy, these groups were the most vociferous and successful in their demand for home rule, partly because they already had experience of federalism and had established a precedent with autonomous institutions like the Catalan Generalitat.* * *1)a) ( sociedad) communityb) ( grupo delimitado) communityc) (Relig) communityd) ( asociación) association2) ( coincidencia) community•• Cultural note:comunidad de ideales/objetivos — community of ideals/objectives
In 1978 power in Spain was decentralized and the country was divided into comunidades autónomas or autonomías (autonomous regions). The new communities have far greater autonomy from central government than the old regiones and were a response to nationalist aspirations, which had built up under Franco. Some regions have more autonomy than others. The Basque Country, Catalonia, and Galicia, for example, had political structures, a desire for independence and their own languages which underpinned their claims to distinctive identities. Andalusia gained almost complete autonomy without having had a nationalist tradition. Other regions, such as Madrid, are to some extent artificial, having been created largely to complete the process. The comunidades autónomas are: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, the Basque Country (Euskadi), Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarre, La Rioja, Valencia and the North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla* * *= community.Ex. Over subsequent decades the various institutions which now form the CAN were set up: the Council of Foreign Ministers in 1979, the Court of Justice in 1983, the Presidential Council in 1990, and the General Secretariat in 1997. The ultimate aim has been to create a Latin American common market. A free trade area was established in 1993, and a common external customs tariff in 1994. While all members have adopted a common foreign policy, more ambitious attempts at integration have been less successful. However, with a combined population of 122 million, and a GDP in 2004 of 300 billion dollars, the community is a significant economic group. In 2004, the leaders of the countries of South America decided to create the “Comunidad Sudamericana de Naciones” (“South American Community of Nations”) or CSN by a gradual convergence between the CAN and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), plus Chile, Guyana and Surinam. This will create, in time, a vast free-trade area encompassing all of South America.* * *f community;hereditaria heirs pl* * *comunidad nf: community* * *comunidad n community [pl. communities] -
